A Schengen visa has to be obtained from the embassy of the country where the main purpose of travel lies. It is therefore advised that you have a planned itinerary before submitting the application with the High Commission of France. In case of travel to multiple Schengen countries, you have to submit your application with the embassy where you will be staying for the maximum number of days, or with the embassy of the country that will be the first point of entry into the Schengen area. This applies when the duration of stay is the same in more than one Schengen country.
Conference or Tourist visa can be applied. Visa letter will not required for tourist visa. Process is same for both the visas.
Before applying for a Visa letter, ensure you qualify under one of the following categories:
A) Conference Registrants (a registration is only completed after the payment of registration fee is successfully processed);
B) Organizing Committee Members;
C) Invited Guests and Speakers;
D) Persons known to the committee members;
Please note that unqualified requests will not be granted.

It is the responsibility of the participant to review his/her visa status and determine whether they need a visa or visa renewal for entering France. Furthermore, it is up to the participant to pay any related fees, find out how to schedule an interview appointment and other instructions for the application process. All travelers have to submit their application personally at the nearest VFS Application Centre.
HOW TO APPLY
Step 1 : Before applying, please ensure you are very clear on your ‘purpose of visit’. Step 2 : Complete your visa application form and affix your photograph. Online Forms are not accepted by VFS. Also, please mention name along with surname of father and spouse, if applicable. Please ensure that you furnish the required documents. You may download document checklist from this website. Incomplete applications may not be accepted. Step 3 : All applicants can visit any of the France Visa Application Centre during working hours. Applicants can submit their application fees by cash. As from 2 November 2015, Applicants requesting a Schengen visa will have to appear in person in order to provide biometric data (fingerprints and digital photography). Live photograph will be captured for all the applicants.
SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT
All applicants are required book an appointment online to submit their visa application at the Joint Schengen visa application center (VFS Global Center). Before you make an appointment you should carefully read the visa application process available on the VFS Global website to submit your visa application and supporting documents at the visa application center. If you have missed your appointment on the scheduled day, the system will not allow you to reschedule or cancel and you will require to book a new appointment after 24 hours. Please make sure you arrive at the visa application center 15 minutes prior to your appointment time. Applicants are not allowed to be accompanied inside the visa application center. The only exceptions to this are those accompanying children under 18 years-of-age or applicants who need special assistance for health reasons or disability. Please be available at the Visa Application Centre, not more than 10 minutes before the appointed time.
